For the last four years I’ve been working with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as a host and auctioneer for many of their events. On Wednesday I hosted, “The Light the Night Awards Dinner.” During the event part of my job was to interview people that had collectively raised 1.5 million dollars in the last year! Many of these people had lost someone close… Which makes one of the questions I was asking almost ridiculous: “What motivated you to raise so much money?” And when a man tearfully responds that it’s because of the spirit of his wife that lost the battle to blood cancer… you can’t help but to simply get it, in the most profound way.
Which again brings me to the point of this project. Life, our own lives, inevitably will have pain, heartbreak, loss, emergencies, and tragedy… We as humans beings have an amazing capacity to create drama, and invent pain over the small things – and really, this is all just NOISE. We as human beings ALSO have the capacity to respond in a big way – to look at that darkness that comes for each us at one point or another and fight back with some light. Here’s to being reminded of that by all my friends at LL&S.
